What a General Physician Actually Does
A general physician is the first person you should see for almost any health concern, and often the only one you will need. The role covers three quite different jobs: diagnosing new problems, managing long-term conditions like diabetes and blood pressure, and catching the things that have not caused symptoms yet. The value of a good family doctor is not in treating any single illness — it is in knowing your history well enough to notice when something has changed.
That is also why seeing the same clinic consistently matters more than most people realise. A blood pressure reading, a weight, or a sugar level means very little in isolation. Read against your own numbers from last year, the same figure can be the earliest sign of a problem worth acting on.
How We Practise at Srinivasa Health Clinic
Dr. Usha Sukumaran has more than three decades of experience in general medicine, and consultations here are deliberately unhurried. We take a proper history, examine you thoroughly, and explain what we think is going on in language that makes sense. Tests are recommended only where the result will change the treatment — a principle that keeps costs down and spares you a great deal of unnecessary anxiety.
You will leave with a clear diagnosis where one can be made, a written plan, and an honest account of what is still uncertain. Where a specialist opinion is genuinely needed we will say so and help you arrange it, rather than treating around the edges of a problem that needs different expertise.
When to Book a Consultation
Come in for a fever that lasts beyond two or three days or keeps returning, persistent tiredness or unexplained weight change, recurring headaches, dizziness or breathlessness, or any new symptom you cannot account for. Equally, book if you are simply overdue a routine check — particularly if you are over 40, have a family history of diabetes or heart disease, or have not had your blood pressure measured in the last year.
General Medicine in Kodambakkam — Common Questions
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome throughout clinic hours — Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. You can also call or message +91 9176343672 to book ahead and reduce your waiting time.
Can a general physician manage diabetes and blood pressure long term?
Yes. Diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, and high cholesterol are managed here routinely, including regular HbA1c monitoring, medication review, and screening for early complications. Keeping this care in one place is what keeps it consistent.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Bring any recent test reports, a list of medicines you currently take including doses, and details of any ongoing conditions or allergies. If you have older reports for the same problem, those help us see how things have changed over time.
Do you see children and elderly patients?
Yes. We provide pediatric consultations as well as geriatric care, and we frequently see several members of the same family in one visit — which is often useful, since it helps us spot patterns across a household.
Will I be sent for a lot of tests?
Only where the result will genuinely change your treatment. Many conditions are diagnosed from a careful history and examination alone, and we would rather explain our reasoning than order a panel of tests by default.
