When Joint or Back Pain Needs a Doctor

Most people live with joint or back pain far longer than they need to. Pain that has settled into a daily routine stops feeling like a medical problem and starts feeling like a fact of life — and by the time it is finally assessed, movement has often already been lost. As a rule, pain lasting more than two weeks, any joint that is swollen or visibly restricted, pain that follows a fall, and numbness or shooting pain down the leg all deserve a proper examination rather than another course of painkillers.

How We Approach Orthopedic Treatment

Dr. S.S. Sukumaran has spent more than three decades treating bone and joint problems, and the approach here is deliberately conservative. We begin by identifying where the pain is genuinely coming from, which is not always where it is felt — hip problems frequently present as knee pain, and lower-back nerve compression is often mistaken for a leg muscle injury. Getting that right is what separates treatment that works from treatment that only postpones the problem.

X-rays and scans are arranged only when the result will actually change what we do. From there, treatment starts with the least invasive option that will work: pain management, physiotherapy guidance, activity modification, and joint protection. Most joint and back pain improves substantially on this alone. Where surgery genuinely is the better option we will say so plainly and explain why — and equally, we will tell you when a procedure being recommended elsewhere is not yet necessary.

What Happens at Your First Visit

Expect an unhurried consultation. We take a history of how the pain started and what makes it better or worse, examine the affected joint along with your posture and range of movement, and explain what we think is happening in plain language. You will leave with a written plan covering medication, exercises, and what to avoid, plus a clear idea of how long improvement should take and when to come back if it does not.

Orthopedic Care in Kodambakkam — Common Questions

Do I need a referral to see the orthopedic doctor?

No referral is required. You can book directly or walk in during clinic hours — Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Will I need surgery for my joint pain?

Most joint and back pain improves with conservative treatment — medication, physiotherapy, and activity changes — and that is always where we start. Surgery is discussed only when it is genuinely the best option, and we will explain clearly why before you decide anything.

Do you treat sports injuries and ligament tears?

Yes. We assess and manage sprains, strains, ligament and meniscus injuries, tendonitis, and post-injury rehabilitation, and we advise on a safe return to activity rather than simply resting until the pain stops.

Can you treat lower back pain and sciatica?

Yes. Lower back pain and sciatica are among the most common problems we see. We identify whether the pain is muscular, mechanical, or from nerve compression, because the correct treatment is very different in each case.

Do you arrange X-rays at the clinic?

We advise and arrange X-rays and other imaging where the result will change your treatment plan. We do not order scans routinely, since most joint and back problems are diagnosed from a careful history and examination.
